82 Motivational January Quotes and Sayings for a Fresh Start

Looking for motivational January quotes and sayings? Want happy January quotes that are inspirational?

I get the excitement. That feeling on January 1st when you’ve got 365 blank days ahead of you. A whole new year to get things done, to live your best life, to finally make it happen. It’s intoxicating, honestly.

But here’s the reality I’ve learned living through Canadian winters. January is also hard. You’re coming off weeks of holidays, getting back to work, dealing with brutal cold, and watching that initial new year excitement fade into the reality of dark mornings and frozen everything.

I’m Nadalie, a goal-slaying coach to a community of over 10,000 and author of Conquer Procrastination. And my take on January? It’s the ultimate paradox. It’s hope and harsh reality colliding. It’s motivation battling against the hardest month of winter.

But that’s also what makes it powerful. If you can find ways to get motivated and moving in January, you can do it any month. These January quotes capture both sides of that, the excitement of fresh starts and the grit it takes to keep going when it’s cold and hard.

Let them inspire you to hold onto that new year energy, even when January tries to freeze it out of you.

Your List of January Reflections. For the reader to remember this post.

January: The Month of New Beginnings

January marks the start of not only a new month but a new year! Cheers to new beginnings, fresh starts, and 365 days of opportunity and possibility!

It’s wondrous to think that January was not always the start of a new year, and still for many around the world, it isn’t. The lunar new year, for example, isn’t until February 1st.

For centuries, March 25th celebrated the spring equinox, and December 25th had the honor of being the first day of the year.

That all changed when Numa Pompilius, a Roman king, made January the first month of the year, instead of March (for the Roman Empire, anyway). Named for Janus, the Roman god of new beginnings, January officially began on the first day of the new year.

In any version of the story, it wasn’t made official until 45 BC when Julius Caesar instituted the 365-day calendar, naming January 1st the start of the year.

No matter the calendar, one ancient tradition hasn’t changed for thousands of years: we all celebrate the start of the new year, and some still write New Year’s resolutions.

Enjoy these January quotes and sayings to help you make a fresh start. They’re perfect for calendars, bullet journals, or even Instagram captions. They’re also perfect January letterboard quotes!
