Because let’s be real. February can be hard if you’re single and feeling lonely while everyone else celebrates love. It’s also Black History Month, which brings its own emotional weight. Sadness for ancestors’ experiences, yet pride and celebration for the Black community. Cold and fire, all at once.

February: The Shortest Month with the Deepest Freeze

February is the second month of the Gregorian calendar. Along with January, it’s one of the two newest months to be added to the previous Roman calendar, which consisted of only ten months. February is named after the Roman god Februus, the god of purification.

We can all thank the Roman King Numa Pomilius for this calendar shift to align with the lunar calendar. Of all the months of the year, February now stands apart. The only 28 days or 29 in a leap year every four years. This extra day every four years is to account for the extra 6 hours and 9 minutes from each rotation around the sun.

There’s more to February than being the shortest and coldest month for many in the northern hemisphere. February marks the start of the Lunar New Year, Valentine’s Day, and Black History Month.

It’s emotional. The darkness and coldness get to us. The celebrations, whether it’s love or history or culture, can feel heavy or isolating depending on where you are in life.
