Goals make us think of what we want in life. They focus us on an end destination, our “best life.” Without them, self-improvement is truly difficult hard to truly become better.
Personal goals also help cure boredom. As long as you are actively working towards goals, you will never feel that life is monotonous. There are so many things to be doing to accomplish every goal that there is no time for boredom!
And last but not least, one of the biggest reasons you should set personal goals is to live life with no regrets. If you are working hard to do something you want to do and something that will improve yourself, you will be happier, full of confidence, and have much less regret throughout life.
How Do I Write A Personal Goal?
First, you need to find a quiet space and take some time to think about where you’re at in life and where you want to be.
What do you see? Write it down.
Write down what you want to become. This could be multiple things that could take varying lengths of time to achieve.
Take time to personally reflect on questions like:
- What do you want to do with your life?
- Who do you want to be?
- What have you always dreamed of?
- When you were younger, what did you love?
Write your thoughts down the moment they come to mind! You will have time to rearrange and edit your thoughts as time goes on.
Now, as you look over what you have written down think of ways that you can put these thoughts into goals.
For instance, if you wrote “I want to become a teacher” you could create goals such as “apply to universities that have the degree I would need to become a _______ teacher”. Or maybe “set aside 30 minutes of study time each night to help me get better grades in school”.
Maybe you want to become less stressed? You could turn that thought into a goal like “read one book a month about how to live a less stressful life and apply its teachings.”

- Track everything you eat on an app like MyFitnessPal or Calorie Counter by FatSecret. Writing down what you eat, by default makes you a little better because you have to consciously think about it.
- Cut out one bad thing from your diet (ie soda, candy, fast food).
- At every meal fill up on fruits and veggies first before eating the rest of the meal.
- Eat strictly healthy except for two times a week. This will require planning, but it allows a bit of flexibility too. If you’re disciplined you can still eat cake at the monthly office party, or go out on that last minute GNO and not feel bad about having junk food.
- Plan on eating one homemade meal a day, every day. Meal plan, shop, and food prep for that meal. Follow through!

#3. Exercise Regularly
This is similar to eating healthy in the sense that everyone knows they should be doing it, but it’s sometimes just hard to know what to do.
Quickly, one major factor in your success of healthy eating and exercising regularly is your community. Such as, who you turn to when you’re tempted to slack off. Accountability is huge when it comes to making big lifestyle changes like these. So here are some suggestions on how to jump-start your personal goal to begin exercising daily.

#38. Make Something Special for Someone Else
Do you have a baby blanket from your grandmother? How about a scrapbook from your mom? These things took time, though, and most importantly, love. And now, because of that love, you cherish them.
Try setting a goal to think of something you can plan out, make, and give as a gift. How wonderful would it be knowing that someone treasures something special from you?
Some ideas of what you could make are:
- Baby blanket
- T-shirt quilt
- Scrapbook or Photobook
- Favorite homemade dessert from scratch
- Baby journal
- Piece of jewelry
#39. Determine a Project That Needs to Be Done and DIY It
We all have things around the house (or apartment) that could use a little TLC, but how often do we just let it sit?
YouTube, library books, the internet in general, friends/family, and creating Craigslist gigs, can help fix what needs fixing.
Making a plan to do it yourself (and carrying those plans out!) can create a large sense of pride and accomplishment. You don’t need to be Chip and Joanna Gains before starting a DIY project, either! You’d be surprised at what you can do when you put your mind to it!
#40. Start a Side Business
According to CNN more than 44 million Americans have side hustles and make extra money on the side. That’s a huge number! It’s no wonder why though because we have so many great resources available nowadays to help people achieve their side business goals.
If you have an idea or are very passionate about something, maybe you should take the plunge and start a side hustle today!
#41. Create a Capsule Wardrobe
Do you spend a lot of time and energy in the morning trying to figure out what you want to wear that day? It can be frustrating, not only for whoever is waiting on you but for yourself too. Creating a capsule wardrobe, however, can be a game changer.
Courtney, from Be More With Less, has used a capsule wardrobe for six-plus years now.
She defines them as, “A small collection of 33 items including clothing, jewelry, accessories and shoes that encourage you to wear your favorite things every day (not the trendiest things, the most stylish things, or the perfect things … your favorite things).”
I highly recommend creating a goal of making yourself one. It will save you a lot of time, money and stress which can result in accomplishing more of your goals. And you’ll be able to get dressed a lot faster too, which is a total bonus!
